What has driven Maldivian students to Taleban?

As reported on Miadhu, the president of Supreme Council Sheikh Mohamed Rasheed has revealed that there are Maldivians trained in warfare tactics who are fighting alongside Mullah Umar and others with Taliban.

“We have received information that they have studied with the followers of Usama Bin Laden and Mulla Umar and that some are actually working with them. There are many young Maldivians there now” said Sheikh Rasheed.

At what point have Maldivian students in Pakistan turned to Taleban to take up suicide killing and become martyrs? How did this start?

Are Maldivian parents aware that such radicalisation is happening to their children sent to study religion? If this is happening with their consent then we have a huge mountain to climb to defeat radicalism and Sheik Rasheed does not have the capacity to do it. This is a frightening situation.

for me it was to find some meaning in life, to get some sense of direction y'know? it was really confusing to grow up in a society which openly preached about religious virtues but didnt give a thought about casting them off in private. this 'middle path' seemed hypcritical and there was no other option left to me. humanism, secularism etc.. were just not taught at schools and i was a typical staple of the Maldivian education system. the dissonance got to me, and i was eventually pulled to one extreme. at first it was all i expected it to be. i felt secure with a father-figure like God wathching over me. and it did inflate my ego a bit to know that this Powerful Being paid so much attention to my prayers and the way i hate or whether i masturbated or not. i felt a sense of belonging too. the 'brotherhood' was always there for me, we had a goal: establishing the caliphate, or die doing it and get eternal reward. the lure of sex and wine helped too. in short, the whole philosophy was a strong pillar of support during my turbulent adolescent years.

but not so long afterward the pretty picture began to show signs of imperfection. wife-beating, killing innocent civilians, hating people just because they're different, the pride and hypocrisy of some of the 'brothers' and 'sisters', the incompatibility of science and religion, the ignorance and backwardness of Muslims all over teh world, etc.. these all got to me and for the first time i began to doubt. And since then i've doubted. I'm still not sure of the right answers to the big questions, but at least now i know what the wrong answers are.

so to answer your question, in my opinion, young ppl in Maldives grow up in a superstitious and hypocritical society, are taught that there is only one way of life, only one philosophy, and then when they see the decadence and materialism around them teenage rebellion sets in, and before you know it a religious fanatic is born. my solution? among other things, education, education, education. instill tolerance in your children, teach them about the difference among ppl, among religion, teach them the tragedies of world history, show them the big picture. teach them to think out of the box, there is more to the world than Islam. let them realise that and perhaps we can avoid this waste of a precious human life.

"More to this world than Islam? "

Now in Islam Islam is the one and only way. there is no other way. Islam is a way of like the way of like. So how can we educate educate and educate such a belief system?
