Do we really respect the dead?

Despite all the great changes that have occurred in the world in technology and communication, the process of showing respect to the deceased has remained the same. It has been said that one can measure how civilized a culture is by the way its dead are treated.

According to this news article, quite a number of human bones had been discovered in a private residence near the Maffannu Cemetery, Male'.

If we had any respect for the dead, we wouldn't be burying them on top of each other...

I think Maldivians generally do respect, and to an extend even fear, the dead. These sort of weird burials crop up pretty much all over Male' and the islands... coming from the times when there really was no central burial place.

I remember my neighbour finding human bones when they started dig for construction work and, if I recall correctly, so did we at our place. No one knew anything about their history or how it got there... It was all replanted to the cemetery and a Islamic prayer performed to honour the dead.

The bones are popping up and has been popping up.

I wonder if we are seeing part of our history being dug up. I once saw such bones and full skeletons, Jaa is talking about, being dug up. These bones looked massive in shape compared to us Maldivians. They were taller and the skulls much much bigger. Even the tibias were long. Very long.

what happened to these people? What is the story behind? I keep wondering.

Jaa, is there any evidence that suggests that such burials took place?

The skeletons i saw looked pretty much like a mass grave. On top of each other as if everyone has been dumped.

I think dating the bones would be a good place to start if we want to know what happened..
