Grim news about young drug users

National Narcotics Control Board (NCB) has confirmed that there are some four and five year old children in Maldives that have used banned substances.

What is happening here is clearly abuse of children by parents or others who have no idea of the harm they are causing. TV Maldives blacked out the news once the the NCB official revealed that 4-year old children were involved in drugs. Bringing out these facts into the public domain is not to glorify the drug abuse or its trade. But Maldivians will have to face up to the facts even if we do not like them. There is no loyalty, no trust, or security with the drug users. It is all about the 'high' which will eventually kill them, unless they can get help and stay away from drugs.

As a society, we have to ask an important question. Should we save our children from drugs? For any sane society, the answer is a resounding 'yes' excepting for the drug addicts who are not in control of their senses. Such people's children must be protected by the State and NCB must intervene to stop such adults causing harm to their children.

There are few things more tragic than having a promising young life cut short prematurely due to drugs. What starts as an experiment turns into an uncontrollable obsession and leads to the most degrading way to end a human life.

TVM really blacked it out? What's with this incessant need for censorship? Aren't we living in a world worryingly delusional enough already?

Hi jaa

May be it was too much for the TVM producer to bear and pulled the plug and took a break lest all those who watched fainted after the unbelivable news was broken. We usually wish our problems away or sweep them under the carpet.

i think its a good idea really.... to have jails where abusers can work and earn money....

Hi anonymous

Yes, it is an execellent idea to teach some skill to jail inmates and they can earn some money for the work they do while serving their time. Such work also can help them become productive citizens when they come out.

This is the price we pay for proctratinating the painful decisions we had to take a long time ago. Imagine you havign a small blister on your thumb. the blister gets infected. You dont want to do anythign about it becuase it hurts. then after a few weeks your entire thumb is infected and subsequently gangrene sets in. If you have to save your arm you now have to amputate your tumb but you still dont want to do anything because its more painful. You have to chop that God forsaken thumb off if you want to save your arm!

Hi askme

Procrastination is one thing our leaders do very well. Inspite of our current grave social situation such as drug abuse or gang violence, they still procrastinate and even more serious consequences will follow us as you have explained. We never learn from our mistakes untill it is too late and we are on a permenant learning curve.

If we follow this path of self-destruction, we will pay an enormous price: the destruction of our society. There will be no peace for any one.
